The Importance of Reading Ability and How to Develop It
As the most frequently used way to get access to the original material, reading has always been considered one of the most important parts of language learning. This explains why reading skills should be highly emphasized.
Then how to improve our reading skills? First of all, scan the material before we begin. Whatever the purpose of our reading is, take a few minutes to look the piece over to check and see how the work is structured and presented. Secondly, try not to reach for the dictionary when we come to a word we don't know. Instead, try to guess the meaning of the word based on the context. Last but not least, write a few sentences to summarize what we've read since it is a way of checking that we understand what we're reading.
Above all, reading has important benefits and can help us learn the language faster and more completely, which encourages each language learner to develop their reading skills as suggested.

The Importance of Writing Ability and How to Develop It
As the most productive and communicative way to express ourselves, writing is attached great importance in all ages. Whether we want to improve our writing skills as a creative writer or simply perfect our skills for schoolwork, we can take some steps to learn how to be a better writer.
Firstly, in order to make our writing creative and imaginative, brainstorming is one of the key elements to build up a unique topic. Don't hesitate to take down all the ideas that come into our mind. Secondly, a good development of our writing is based on a clear structure or paragraph organization. Even a simple outline will help us see the big picture and save us hours of rewriting. Finally, diversity of vocabulary and grammar used in writing is highly recommended for the reason that one of the most common manifestations of bad writing is overuse or reuse of simple language.
To sum up, we should take practice and expand our knowledge to become a great writer. With enough hard work and scientific techniques, we will amaze not only ourselves but also anybody else.

The Importance of Speaking Ability and How to Develop It
As we all know, proficiency in speaking is necessary for us to become well-rounded communicators. However, the capacity to put words together in a meaningful way to reflect thoughts, opinions, and feelings is not something we're born with but needs some techniques and practice.
Firstly, build confidence and concentrate on getting our message across, which help us gain the attention of the audience return. Secondly, experiment with the things we know well instead of challenging ourselves with difficult words since fluency appears more important during oral communication. Lastly, create some opportunities to practice like narrating our daily life to ourselves or maintaining a regular chat with friends.
To sum up, only by being confident enough and using efficient methods can we enhance our speaking ability. Follow the steps to improve our speaking skills in order to achieve a higher standard in communication.

The Challenges of Living in a Big City
①With the development of economy and urbanization, the number of big cities is constantly increasing in China. ②While big cities are attracting more and more people, they also bring many challenges, such as traffic jam and pollution, just to name a few.
③The first problem that really bothers me is the traffic congestion during rush hours. I hate waiting for buses and being late for school or work. ④The next problem is that the large population in big cities makes them so crowded that we can hardly find a peaceful place unless staying at home. Supermarkets are always crowded, so are cinemas and parks. ⑤Another consequence of the large population is that it intensifies the inadequacy of high-quality medical and educational resources, thus decreasing residents' sense of happiness.
⑥As a result, although I am frequently asked whether I like to live in a big city or not, my answer is always: "no, definitely not." What about you?

The Challenges of Studying Abroad
①As is universally acknowledged, it is by no means easy to study abroad ② since you could come across a list of unexpected difficulties and setbacks which you cannot imagine before going abroad.
③First of all, the top challenge is the culture shock, which means you may not adapt to the exotic life during the first few days or even months. ④ secondly, the language barrier could be a nightmare for many foreign students who possess poor mastery of the official language of the country where they study.⑤ Last but not least, you could be overwhelmed by the academic requirements if you are not well prepared. Long lists of reference books, numerous projects, papers and professors with varying personalities could wear you out.
⑥ Despite all these terrifying challenges, you will finally manage to come through this "dark age" with your hard work, persistence and endurance. And then a bright future will await you.

The Challenges of Starting a Career After Graduation
Recent years have witnessed a sharp rise in the number of college students who successfully start their career after graduation. However, many others fail to do so because the transition from a student to an employee is actually full of challenges.
First of all, you might not be popular with every colleague, which is frustrating for a newcomer of the workplace. So you'd better try to make a good first impression on all of your workmates, especially your boss. Furthermore, there probably is a gap between what you've learned at school and what you are required at work. You have to learn actively and quickly, and avoid making too many mistakes. Finally, the low payment for a new graduate and various living expenses make it difficult to make ends meet, so you may find yourself always on a tight budget.
As the old proverb goes, "Well begun is half done." If you can handle these challenges successfully after graduation, you will clear the path for future career development, such as job promotion or starting your own business. So hold on and never give up!

A Visit to Guangming Farm Opens Students' Eyes
Sponsored by the Student Union, a total of 30 students paid a visit to Guangming Farm, a local farm 50 kilometers away from our university on June 8, 2019.
Guangming Farm is a state-owned farm mainly planting crops such as wheat and corn and producing milk and dairy products. During this visit, students saw the grand farmland and were deeply Impressed by the modern agricultural technology and the completely automotive operation of wheat harvest in particular. The trip culminated in a visit to a manufacturing process of dairy products. Mary, a student from the Department of Foreign Languages, said at the thought of agriculture, what occurred to her was the images of sweating peasants laboring in their field under the Sun. However, this trip totally changed her stereotype of Chinese agriculture.
The trip of fieldwork deepens college students' understanding of the rapid social development by what they have witnessed in person, and will exert an ever-lasting influence upon their future study and work.

A Visit to Elderly People Brings Them Great Laughter and Joy
Students from the School of Physics took part in a volunteer activity organized by the Student Union to assist elderly people in the neighborhood this weekend, bringing them great laughter and joy.
With the increasing awareness of the aging of population, the whole society sets out to take better care of and show more respect for our senior citizens for their lifelong dedication and commitment to our society. In response to the call, this weekend a group of volunteers went to the local community to communicate with the elderly and help them with some housework. Much pleased at their coming, all the elderly people expressed their sincere thanks for young volunteers' company. In the light of many adult children not being able to visit their aging parents frequently, many old people have to endure loneliness. Thus, what matters most to than is the company and listening attentively is just a good idea.
The Student Union expressed their willingness to sponsor more meaningful activities like this to serve our society with college students' passion and talents.

Hi Mark,
I'm so glad that you have made up your mind to teach English in China. Before you make a decision about your precise destination, let me introduce my hometown, Chongqing.
Located in southwest China, Chongqing may not enjoy worldwide fame as much as Beijing or Shanghai, but it is a thriving metropolis with lower cost of living. Working and living here, you can achieve your career goals without feeling too much stress. The locals are known for being warm and hospitable, and you can teach in a way that feels good for you. To be sure, teaching a foreign language in a city where residents speak a dialect all the time can be very challenging. It takes time indeed to correct pronunciation mistakes each student makes. But since you are always praised for your kindness and patience, it should hardly be an obstacle for you.
Anyway, I will support and help you as much as possible, whichever city you go to. I believe living and teaching in China will be a pleasant and memorable experience for you.
Best wishes,
Li Ming

Dear Mike,
How's everything going? Last time you said you felt inclined to learn Chinese but had no clue where to start. So I'm writing to recommend a place to you -- the Confucius Institute, an established language center aimed to promote Chinese language and culture.
The reasons for my recommendation are as follows. Firstly, this Chinese government-funded educational institute is staffed by the most experienced, professional Chinese teachers, which ensures high-quality instruction. You can turn to them whenever you encounter difficulties in mastering the tones and the characters. Secondly, students there are encouraged to take part in activities ranging from making traditional food to learning clligraphy, as a means of exposing them to the appealing aspects of Chinese culture. Besides, the organization is now widely embraced by more than two million students. That means you aren' t alone as a beginner and will probably forge deep friendships with other learmers.
Learming a language from scratch won't be easy. But I believe you'll find yourself having fun while improving your Chinese proficiency.
Best wishes,
Li Hua

Hello Tom,
I'm pretty excited to hear that you are going to pursue a postgraduate degree in economics in China. If you are still uncertain about which college to apply to, why not go to Renmin University of China (RUC)?
I recommend it mainly because of its academic reputation. Today, it is widely recognized for its strengths in the fields of humanities and social sciences.
The School of Economics often invites distinguished scholars at home and abroad to academic forums or seminars. You will definitely gain new insights into various economic issues by attending them as a student. Another striking feature of this university is its vibrant campus life, as evidenced by activities such as Fun Sports Games, school orienteering competitions and the annual International Culture Festival. You will find them all highly enjoyable. Moreover, RUC is conveniently situated close to bus stops and subway stations, so you can spend your spare time exploring the city of Beiing.
Of course, it's totally up to you. Let me know if you make a final decision. Anyway, welcome to China.
Yours,
Zhang Lei

Back then, however, those who wished to enjoy longevity ventured in Mount Hua quite a lot because numerous herbs, rare ones in particular, grew in the mountain. Paper-cuts are usually made of red paper, because red is associated with happiness in traditional Chinese culture. Today, that tradition is changing. As housing conditions improve, more and more young couples are opting to live apart from their parents. But the connections between them still remain strong. For thousands of years, Chinese family names have been passed down through the father. Nowadays, however, it is not uncommon for a child to adopt the mother's family name. Generally, a given name is made up of one or two characters, usually carrying the parents' wishes for their child. It can be inferred from the name what kind of person the parents want their child to be, or what kind of life they expect him or her to lead. Chinese parents attach great importance to the choice of their child's name, as the name tends to accompany the child for his or her entire life.
